On Virginia Creeper album, Grant Lee Phillips have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Lead single “Wish I Knew” and “Hickory Wind” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Stanley Donwood has compared writing for Grant Lee Phillips’s new album to that on ‘Virginia Creeper’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. One of Grant Lee Phillips’s best albums yet.
Hickory Wind - arguably the best track on Virginia Creeper album. Still going through Virginia Creeper and coming to appreciate Susanna Little more and more with every listen. Far End Of The Night is cool and different song. Josephine Of The Swamps is one of the best records ever. It’s very catchy and easy to get into which is what you want in a song. Such hits like Calamity Jane will leave you hooked. Voice of Grant Lee Phillips in Dirty Secret is honest and guitar work is subtle and poignant. Lily-A-Passion is flawed, nonetheless pretty good song. In Mona Lisa you won’t find any flashy solos. The song feels complete.
