Oscar Peterson was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Oscar Peterson and Plays Porgy and Bess together. Since Oscar Peterson last CD (Plays Porgy and Bess) on SixSteps records back in 2005, I have felt a massive void in my life. ‘Plays Porgy and Bess’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. This is one of Oscar Peterson best albums
You have to get essence of the Here Come de Honey Man’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Oh Bess, Oh Where’s My Bess? is probably one of Oscar Peterson’s biggest successes for the album - it’s lovely to listen to. It’s such an underrated song. It Ain’t Necessarily So without a doubt is the standout song of Plays Porgy and Bess. The first time I listened to Oh, Lawd, I’m on My Way! I was struck by its astounding sound. Summertime still maintains something of a specific flourish. Oh Dey’s So Fresh an’ Fine (Strawberry Woman) had me crying as I was able to relate so well. I Wants to Stay Here is the album’s biggest hit, I think. I was truly moved when I heard I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’.
