This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by Kenji Kawai. Now signed to Kenji Kawai’s EMI Records, the title track from second album “Battle Of Wits” leads Kenji Kawai’s back-to-school campaign. Battle Of Wits isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. This album is in perfect progression from Kenji Kawai!
This track is full of harmonies and gets Battle Of Wits off to a relaxing start. First Encounter is really a nice song to relax and listen too. The opening track Defeated is very much like you would expect from other albums. Ambush is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. This song is like perfectly aged vintage bordeaux wine not a tequila shot. Strong percussion and poignant lyrics of this track really gets under your skin. The Contest is one of my favorite songs by Kenji Kawai. War On A Board Game is one of the best records ever. The Command is a bit of a show-tune. The Spy is a astounding sing-along. Sea Of Fire is a very good song maybe surprisingly better than you at first might’ve imagined. Within the first few notes of Furious it’s perfectly clear that Kenji Kawai is living this song. Secret Intrusion is the astounding blend of moody yet optimistic tunes. This track makes my mind whirl and vibrate with flowing energy. Universal Love is a song to enjoy for years to come. Retreat is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. As always, Kenji Kawai’s lyrics are worth listening to again and again. Menace - arguably the best track on Battle Of Wits album. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. Voice Of The Ruin is sonically very melodic with nice haunting verses. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. The Last Night is the song that really did it for me. I listened to the opening track Mourn Of Hell and liked it a lot. Some of the arrangements found on Battle Of Wits are surprisingly edgy. After few listenings I started to like Return more and more. |titile| is a sure sign of something most of us are experiencing, maturity. Simply the finest work ever from this multi-talented singer. I have all of Kenji Kawai’s tracks and The End is probably the most his introspective effort. When I listen to A Battle Of Wits in my car when traffic ain’t going so good.
