Lead single “Highwayman” and “The Last Cowboy Song” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. After seeing Highwayman, I had to have a good The Highwaymen cd. ‘The Highwayman Collection’ kicks the album off with a blast of pure pop energy. This is what good Country should be.
The Last Cowboy Song is one of the coolest songs The Highwaymen has ever recorded. Jim, I Wore A Tie Today is a song that takes you on the journey before it reaches the conclusion. Big River - A strong beat. What sets Committed To Parkview apart is The Highwaymen’s innovative and organic way of creating atmospheres. Desperados Waiting For A Train has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets The Highwaymen’s strong vocals come to the fore. Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos) is flawed, nonetheless pretty good song. Welfare Line is a fine track on any terms. This is one of those tracks that should not be judged after the first hearing. Album opener The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over is a bright, upbeat ditty. Silver Stallion is the funkiest number on the album. Born And Raised In Black And White is perhaps one of the best tracks of the past decade. Two Stories Wide has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. Overall a nice softer song. American Remains is probably the highlight of the album. Lyrics of Anthem 84 are precise and evocative. Angels Love Bad Men which is my favorite is a truly The Highwaymen sounding song. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Living Legend is one of my favorite songs by The Highwaymen. The Highwayman Collection couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track Texas.
