Since completing 2004’s ‘Mayhem I’, Pan Sonic fulfilled their contract with Sparrow Records and where under no obligation to release another album. This is the first studio album from Pan Sonic since bad diagnosis in 2004. On Kesto album, Pan Sonic have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. This album is awesome.
Mutator is a catchy, up-tempo track that has influence of music streams without leaning too much in that direction. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: Cavity, which shows, blatantly, how much Pan Sonic has evolved as a singer. Fugalforce had me crying as I was able to relate so well. Louhi is one of my favorite songs by Pan Sonic. I find myself hearing bits of Mayhem II here and there throughout my waking hours. Halter makes a person feel perfect. This track is full of harmonies and gets Kesto off to a relaxing start. The sound in Diminsher is really warm and Pan Sonic’s signature voice is still very much present. The first time I listened to Mayhem III I was struck by its amazing sound. Rafter is a nice, innocuous song, and much better than anything Pan Sonic released so far. As always, Pan Sonic’s lyrics are worth listening to again and again. Distance is just simply stunning. This track is possibly the biggest guilty pleasure on Kesto. No Pan Sonic song has come close to capturing my attention as Current-Transformer did. Tasmania rocked my world when I popped it into my car stereo. Cable 5. is a song you cannot help but think about at odd moments in your day. Album opener Light-Transformer is a bright, upbeat ditty. Don’t judge Groundfrost-Being on the first listening. Pan Sonic allows each song to breathe and flourish. Kesto couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track Exposure. Telemites is absolutely incredible. Prospekt Vernadskogo - a classic song. Once you hear Arctic, you will listen to it over and over. Sewageworld is a excellent sing-along. Pan Sonic rocks harder than ever with Corridor. Blew our minds when we first heard Appearanceform. Arches of Frost is the more seemingly obscure song on Kesto that bear up best to repeated listening. Inexplicable - I just love it. I like the idea behind Air. Listening to Sleep of Haddock you can hear that Pan Sonic has still amazing chemistry with band members. From the moment you listen to Lines you’re hooked. This is probably my favorite song on the album.
