Since Gheorghe Zamfir last CD (Essential) on Mute Records back in 2004, I have felt a massive void in my life. Since completing 2004’s ‘Amazing Grace’, Gheorghe Zamfir fulfilled their contract with Mute Records and where under no obligation to release another album. I am not a real New Age music type of person, but i have to admit ‘Essential’ really is amazing. If I may, I suggest “Amazing Grace”. That one song is amazing!
Annie’s Song is the albums lead single as well as biggest hit. Music of Ave Maria is gentle, never overbearing. Beautiful Dream - This one is lively and fun. Bilitis - Gheorghe Zamfir first major hit. Chariots Of Fire has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Gheorghe Zamfir’s strong vocals come to the fore. Feerie good vocals. It took me a little time but I ended up loving Love Is All. Memory pretty much defines how I feel spiritually. Mourir A Madrid as a highlight of Essential contains a ton of excellent melodies. Omoide Zukuri - I used to hate this song, but now it’s one of my favorites. Panis Angelicus hits the heart. Plaisir D’amour is one of the best records ever. She is a song that definitely grows on you and becomes an album favorite. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is The Rose because the melody in the chorus is so good. From the sound of it, I believe the song can be a big radio hit. Vitrall De Lune on Essential is solid and easy to listen to. Wild Theme - This one is what it is: a powerful, primal invitation to love. Winter (L’hiver) is possibly the best song Gheorghe Zamfir has come up. Outside of the singles, my favorite song on Essential is Yesterday.
