five years ago, Lionel Hampton briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “When Lights Are Low”. Since Lionel Hampton last CD (Gold Collection (cd1)) on Columbia Records back in 2006, I have felt a massive void in my life. Since completing 2006’s ‘12th Street Rag’, Lionel Hampton fulfilled their contract with Columbia Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Gold Collection (cd1) is preety good and all the songs have a good meaning behind them.
You have to get essence of the When Lights Are Low’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Music in Jumpin’ Jive is cool as in all tracks of Gold Collection (cd1). When listening to Ain’t Cha Comin’ Home?, it gives me such an energy rush it’s unbelievable. I like the agression and power of Sweethearts On Parade. Wizzin’ The Wizz presents the astounding mix of instruments on Gold Collection (cd1). Shufflin’ At The Hollywood is a medium tempo tune. Down Home Jump is a amazing song and it grows on you. This track, in particular, has the kind of undeniably catchy flavor. Shoes Shinner’s Drag is astounding. In Ring Dem Bells it becomes nowhere more obvious that Lionel Hampton has yet to define own style. The Sun Will Shine Tonight is the most memorable and gorgeous. This track is full of harmonies and gets Gold Collection (cd1) off to a relaxing start. Simple and heartfelt closing track I Know That I Know closes Gold Collection (cd1) on a high note. This song is dynamic and dramatic. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: On The Sunny Side Of The Street, which shows, blatantly, how much Lionel Hampton has evolved as a singer. This song has very few things relative to that of it’s predecessor. In Buzzin’ Around With The Bee Lionel Hampton spins a tale you want to hear to the end. Hampton Stomp is a song to savor, to listen to from every angle. Jivin’ The Vibes is one of the more up-tempo songs on Gold Collection (cd1).
