After seeing Ravel - Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte, I had to have a good James Galway cd. fourteen years ago, James Galway briefly lived up to their terrific name, with an insanely addictive hit single called “Satie - Gymnopedie No. 3″. On Wings Of Song album, James Galway have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. This is what good Instrumental should be.
Satie - Gymnopedie No. 3 is the albums biggest surprise. Schubert - Ave Maria is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. Traditional - The Dawning Of The Day - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody. Rodrigo - En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor (Based On The 2Nd Movement Of Concerto De Aranjuez) is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. I think J.S. Bach - Siciliano (Sonata For Violin and Harpsichord No. 4 In C Minor, Bwv 1017) is the best song James Galway has ever done. You have to get essence of the Saint-Saens - Mon Coeur S’ouvre A Ta Voix (Samson Et Dalila)’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. This track is just a stunning masterpiece. Opening track Faure - Pie Jesu (Requiem) shows the best of James Galway. James Galway is hitting on all cylinders in Offenbach - Barcarolle (Les Contes D’hoffmann). Wagner - Der Engel (Wesendonck-Lieder No. 1) is a fine track on any terms. Gluck - Che Faro Senza Euridice (Orfeo Ed Euridice) - A nice song. In Dvorak - Lento (String Quartet No. 12 In F Major, Op. 96 American B 179) James Galway spins a tale you want to hear to the end. Brahms - Wiegenlied (Guten Abend, Gut’ Nacht) is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. Shore - A Lord Of The Rings Suite (For Sir James Galway) is so unique, as each one of the songs is. Denver - Annie’s Song one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard.
