Since Brownside last CD (Payback) on Mute Records back in 2005, I have felt a massive void in my life. It’s natural for Brownside to take a stab at ‘Sureno Vida’ considering her long-professed love for Orkrist. Nowhere is this more so than on their re-working of Brownside on ‘Sureno Vida’. This is what good Rap: Hip-Hop should be.
In Payback it becomes nowhere more obvious that Brownside has yet to define own style. One of the songs that always stick in my mind is Do Or Die because the melody in the chorus is so good. Eastside Drama make listening to Brownside like being in some sort of time warp. I like to sing along with Hittin’ Switches, though I mess up the lyrics sometimes. You have to get essence of the Last Day’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece. Musically Vatos In The Barrio is superior to other tracks in Payback. Creepin’ is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. Music in Gangsta Point Of View is exquisite as in all tracks of Payback. This song is very powerful, its catchy melody will have you singing along in no time. Can’t Stop The Southland - a classic song. Brownside sings Corona in such a comforting, confident voice that you can’t help but be moved. Gang Related is probably the highlight of the album. Life On The Streets has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Brownside’s strong vocals come to the fore. Thirteen Reasons is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations.
